Screening Room with John & Faith Hubley (1973) - PREVIEW
Purchase: http://www.der.org/films/screening-room-hubley.html John and Faith Hubley worked as a team over many years to set standards for creative animation. Beginning at Disney, they moved on to develop new techniques, such as watercolor work on paper, and to offer bold political content. They were the first to combine animation with jazz, working with such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Oscar Peterson. John and Faith Hubley appeared on Screening Room in April 1973 to discuss and screen their films Eggs, The Hat, Children of the Sun, and Zuckerkandl.

Courthouse With Curved Elements (2001)
This prototype house is one of a series of courthouse designs made by Mies van der Rohe in 1930's. The computer graphics film team took the original schematic design that survived on a plan drawing, achieved a derivative version by adding components similar to those found in other projects designed and built by the architect and developed a visualization utilizing radiosity-based software. The camera moves between and around the uniquely shaped elemental walls and reveals the pleasure of developing scenes full of material colors and the ambiance of sunlight.

In the TV cartoon series, Zoids, made with the toon shader of SoftImage 3D, and 2D cel animations were blended without any oddness.First, each 3D CG model's basic actions (walking, running, jumping) were established, then using the ''animation sequencer'' function of SoftImage 3D, an autofilling ''motion blend'' was performed on the changing parts between the basic actions to produce many cuts. Then, RETAS! PRO and After Effects were used for the cel drawings combining 2D characters, hanging smoke, rock, and natural objects. These made it possible to fine-tune the arrangement, and any oddness between the two was eliminated.

New World Computing Cinematic Team (2001)
The NWC Cinematic Team is dedicated to the ideal that as a species, we are either inherent storytellers or we're those who hunger to experience the rich tapestry woven by those visual artisans. So prevalent is this drive that there is room for both the industrial entertainment machines and the village storytellers, in whatever form that they take. We are only seven, but each of us bring to the table one exquisite spice to mix with our diligence and passion into a feast that we humbly lay before our family, friends and neighbors. It is a fairy tale based on my grandmother's experience of surviving World War II. At that time, Japan occupied Korea. Conceived as a critique of traditional architectural ''flythroughs'' and perhaps a glimpse into the future of online environments, this short film documents the investigation of an abandoned house from multiple points of view. The ''handheld'' camera movement was accomplished through four layers of motion capture data via the mouse. The house was designed and modeled in form-Z, animation in 3ds max, and rendering in mental ray. AfterEffects and Combustion were used for compositing and graphics. Early Light is part 2 of a 3 part series dealing with times of day/seasons. The idea is to create a living manuscript of the impressions/memories of different seasons and how they unfold. The work progresses from the end of Winter thru Spring and is also Morning. The work is inspired by experiences of landscape as sensed internally and spiritually. These are interpretations of natureÆs consciousness emerging and shifting in character. The source scenes are constructed from multiple photographs and video footage. The stills are animated thru mattes of generated light, wind and noise. Producer / Director: John S. The title written in Chinese means the way to reach true knowledge. I tried to depict my own realization of the circle of life in this animation, the destined suffering since the birth, the paralyzed salvation after the death and the voidness of meaning. The only way to escape from the circle of life is to see it and to realize it, although the realization evaporates in a moment. I wanted to see it to show it. Fireflies lead us into an enchanting forest, where a magnificant tree is hosting this evening's serenade. At the base, we find a composer adding the final notes to his midnight symphony. Amongst the branches, a worker is diligently carving an insturment from the woods around him. Beneath the moonlight, the piece intensifies as we join the conductor and his orchestra above the canopy of leaves. Director: Jason Judy. Paul Downs.
