Doctor Phibes - An animated music video from Dissonant Creatures by Aaron Kerr and Swallows

The music for "Doctor Phibes" was originally inspired by a Scooby Doo episode, but as we worked on arrangements for the "Dissonant Creatures" CD, the song became somewhat darker than the cartoon episode that remains its namesake. The vocalizations in the song were originally sung in Portuguese and the lyrics followed the plot of "The Abominable Dr. Phibes," the Vincent Price B-Movie cult classic; however, by the end of the project, we decided to move the vocals and lyrics to an accompanying role. The resulting piece a rhythmic dreamscape with gothic and world music undertones. The animated short film "ManHang" by Hyun-suk Kim provides excellent textural fabric that visually weaves the elements of the song together. In fact, these two projects fit so well together that we wound up mixing some of the film's original sound effects into the final video we've posted here. The images Kim created are - at the same time - wonderful, bizarre, beautiful, and slightly disturbing,... which make them a perfect fit for our project. ABOUT DISSONANT CREATURES: "Dissonant Creatures" is the second release from cellist and composer Aaron Kerr. For the Dissonant Creatures project, Aaron teamed up with the rock band Swallows to arrange and produce the album. "Dissonant Creatures" began as a series of minimalist compositions featuring cello and piano. Swallows Tyson Allison and Jeff Crandall added ambient soundscapes to Aarons original tracks using analog keyboards, guitars, homemade effects and loops, environmental sounds, percussion and vocals. The finished pieces balance musicality and rhythmic pulse with ambience and space. The overall feel of "Dissonant Creatures" is sensual and meditative, and the pieces are colored with dark tones and rich textures. Stylistically, the compositions are cinematic in nature and incorporate modal folk, gothic and avant-garde classical themes. "Dissonant Creatures" was recorded at Covert Transmissions Studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and is was released on Emperor Penguin Records in May 2009. Aaron's work has been featured in several theater productions, including Passage by Edward Bok Lee, Vincent, a dance production by Decadance, and We, an adaptation of the novel by Yevgeny Zamyatin. In 1999, The American Composers Forum awarded Aaron with a New Music Series grant. Aaron has lent his compositional and performance skills to several bands and recording artists over the years, including Anahada Nada, The Semiconductor Orchestra, Mellow Drunk, The Sleeper Pins, JazZen, Michael Campbell, Thinland, Leigh Gregory, The Urban Hillbilly Quartet and Swallows. SWALLOWS are an eclectic rock band from Minnesota. The quartet is known for their blend of classic blues, rock, Americana and folk. Swallows 2008 release Songs for Strippers (and other professions) was recently lauded as one of the top albums of 2008 by "Consequence of Sound" magazine. PARADISE (Entire Film)

Now Playing in the YouTube Screening Room: http://youtube.com/ytscreen... http://www.nfb.ca/paradise Paradise tells the story of a man whose actions are controlled by fate, who is forced to follow a predetermined path. Lacking free will, John Small looks to a better tomorrow, but fails to find fulfillment in the present. We are inside a machine. Cogs spin and a giant automaton whirrs to life, impossibly large; it is an impossibly large metallic, mid-century city, whose painted tin denizens buzz happily and obediently along slotted tracks. This is Paradise. Here, in a brightly and cheerfully coloured suburban home, we meet John Small. He's an optimistic, ambitious little man dedicated to the future, to success in his career. John is absorbed in his work and his daily routine and blissfully oblivious of his lonely and disillusioned wife, Jane. As his perfect little life unravels, John remains obstinate and focused on his goals. But John is misguided in his efforts, unable to realize the value of what he has and what he stands to lose. Happiness eludes him. Directed by Jesse Rosensweet. Produced in 2007.

WHEN THE DAY BREAKS (Entire Film)

Now Playing in the YouTube Screening Room: http://youtube.com/ytscreeningroom Visit www.nfb.ca for more After witnessing the accidental death of a stranger, Ruby seeks affirmation in the city around her, and finds it in surprising places. With deft humor and finely rendered detail, When the Day Breaks illuminates the links which connect our urban lives, while evoking the promise and fragility of a new day. Co-directors Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis use pencil and paint on photocopies to achieve a textured look suggestive of a lithograph or a flickering newsreel. In When the Day Breaks, the ordinary--a lemon, a toaster, a chance collision on a street corner--is endowed with a visceral power. A film without words.

Beginning at Disney, they moved on to develop new techniques, such as watercolor work on paper, and to offer bold political content. They were the first to combine animation with jazz, working with such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Oscar Peterson. John and Faith Hubley appeared on Screening Room in April 1973 to discuss and screen their films Eggs, The Hat, Children of the Sun, and Zuckerkandl.

Is our existence just coincidence? Do little things matter? The narrator of The Danish Poet considers these questions as we follow Kasper, a poet whose creative well has run dry, on a holiday to Norway to meet the famous writer, Sigrid Undset. As Kasper's quest for inspiration unfolds, it appears that a spell of bad weather, an angry dog, slippery barn planks, a careless postman, hungry goats and other seemingly unrelated factors might play important roles in the big scheme of things after all. Alan Parsons Project - If I Could Change Your Mind (CGI) (((Stereo)))

This video is 100% CGI (Animation) Album:Eve - 1979 Album concept: Women; this is the only Project album to feature female lead vocalists - and even then only on two tracks. If I Could Change Your Mind is sung by Lesley Duncan. The video is CGI and I edited it to fit the audio in an interesting yet sensually abstract way. ~Ric~ Lyrics: (Lead vocal - Lesley Duncan) I prefer to spend my time in solitary ways Keeping myself to myself Can't pretend that it's been easy since you went away Living with somebody else If you should change your mind If you would turn around and look behind If you could see me the way I used to be At the risk of bringing back the sorrow and despair I would do it all again Holding on to memories and pretending not to care Knowing that the show was soon to end If only I could change your mind If only you would change If I had the chance I'd do it all again I would do it all again I remember windy shores on menancholy days Drifting along with the tide And the joy of simple things and ordinary ways Taking it all in my stride If you should change your mind If I could let you see what lies behind If you could need me the way it used to be Even for a moment of the happy times we shared Living in my dreams since then At the risk of losing only castles in the air Come with me and we can try again Oh, if I could change your mind Can't pretend it's not been lonely since you went away Oh, if only I could change your mind...

Alan Parsons Project - Some Other Time (CGI) (((Stereo))) [WS] {HQ}

This video is 100% CGI. The animation was created by Daniel Zagorsky from Lodz, Poland and heavily edited for this song by RicBNH. The concept of the video (animation) is: You Arrange Your Life Accordingly To Your Calculus Of Probability. Some Other Time is from the album 'I ROBOT'. Video: (lead vocals: Peter Straker & Jaki Whitren) I Robot is a progressive rock album recorded by The Alan Parsons Project, engineered by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson in 1977. It was released by Arista Records in 1977 and re-released on CD in 1984 and 2007. It was intended to be based on the I, Robot stories written by Isaac Asimov, and actually Woolfson spoke with Asimov, who was enthusiastic about that. But the rights had already been granted to a TV/movie company, so the album's title was altered slightly by removing the comma, and the theme and lyrics were made to be more generically about robots rather than specific to the Asimov universe. The cover inlay reads: "I ROBOT... THE STORY OF THE RISE OF THE MACHINE AND THE DECLINE OF MAN, WHICH PARADOXICALLY COINCIDED WITH HIS DISCOVERY OF THE WHEEL... AND A WARNING THAT HIS BRIEF DOMINANCE OF THIS PLANET WILL PROBABLY END, BECAUSE MAN TRIED TO CREATE ROBOT IN HIS OWN IMAGE." Lyrics: In a matter of a moment Lost till the end of time It's the evening of another day And the end of mine Now the starlight which has found me Lost for a million years Tries to linger as it fills my eyes Till it disappears Could it be that somebody else is Looking into my mind Some other place Somewhere Some other time Some other place Somewhere Some other time Like a mirror held before me Large as the sky is wide And the image is reflected Back to the other side Could it be that somebody else is Looking into my mind Some other place Somewhere Some other time Some other place Somewhere Some other time

Courthouse With Curved Elements (2001)

This prototype house is one of a series of courthouse designs made by Mies van der Rohe in 1930's. The computer graphics film team took the original schematic design that survived on a plan drawing, achieved a derivative version by adding components similar to those found in other projects designed and built by the architect and developed a visualization utilizing radiosity-based software. The camera moves between and around the uniquely shaped elemental walls and reveals the pleasure of developing scenes full of material colors and the ambiance of sunlight.

ZOIDS (2001)

In the TV cartoon series, Zoids, made with the toon shader of SoftImage 3D, and 2D cel animations were blended without any oddness.First, each 3D CG model's basic actions (walking, running, jumping) were established, then using the ''animation sequencer'' function of SoftImage 3D, an autofilling ''motion blend'' was performed on the changing parts between the basic actions to produce many cuts. Then, RETAS! PRO and After Effects were used for the cel drawings combining 2D characters, hanging smoke, rock, and natural objects. These made it possible to fine-tune the arrangement, and any oddness between the two was eliminated.
